Level 2 Certificate Interior Design

The City & Guilds 7157 Creative Techniques - Interior Design Level 2 course is for those who want to develop their skills and who are wishing to obtain a strong foundation in the interior design subject area.

Students learn, develop and practise the creative skills required for career progression in the interior design industry becoming a well-informed interior designer in your chosen area with strong practical skills. Previous study or achievement in art or design is not required; all you need is huge enthusiasm for all things interiors!

The qualification is divided into four sections, two mandatory units:

● Developing design ideas

● Sampling techniques and processes for Interiors

plus two Interior Design assignments from

● An interior loft space

● A home based office

● A bedroom with an en-suite shower room

In Developing Design Ideas you will explore the basic elements of the design using a range of materials and mediums linked to colour, line and mark making, shape and pattern, visual and surface texture, and form.Sampling the techniques and processes required for designing an interior scheme enables you to build and develop the skills needed for successful interior design. This includes colour scheming, scale drawing, lighting, spatial awareness, window treatments, wall and floor coverings, sourcing furniture and furnishings, presentation etc., all planned to provide you with a logical progression of acquiring skills.

Combined with Developing Design Ideas, these units provide inspiration and knowledge to complete two project units and present interior design schemes for a home based office, a loft space or a bedroom with an en-suite shower room.

Interior Design schemes created and presented by this year's students show a wide range of imaginative and well developed ideas for the home based office.

Progression

Students use the qualification to go onto higher levels of study; past students have progressed onto Level 3 courses, BA Interior Design at Portsmouth University and BA Fine Art here at Northbrook MET. This year a student has gained a place at UWE in Bristol for BA(Hons) Interior Design.

Others have used the qualification to gain employment within Interior Design Practices, Bathroom Designers, Kitchen Designers, national magazines such as House and Garden, In house Interior Services including Laura Ashley and other retailers. Students have been appointed as Manager at Suzie Watson Designs in Chichester, worked with Interior designers Angela Cheung and Hannah Searle, secured positions as junior designers in Sussex based bathroom design retail and soft furnishing companies, plus kitchen and bathroom design advisors at B&Q and Wickes.

A range of self-employed or independent business owners have improved or extended the service they offer to clients and with experience and self-confidence, you may feel able to set up a business to offer your own Interior Design or Styling Service,

Many students are also delighted to extend their skills for their own personal use and development which may also lead to further courses of formal or informal study.
